Communications Specialist


Steven serves as the Communications Specialist for the Office of Integrative Activities (OIA), webmaster for the office, Sharepoint manager, and graphic designer of inreach/outreach materials.

Prior to his current position, Steven was an Information Technology Specialist and Program Analyst for OIA. He worked with NSF's Senior Staff and Program Officers on scientific programs and activities, such as: the Science & Technology Centers (STC), Major Research Instrumentation (MRI), the National Medal of Science, the Alan T. Waterman award, and the Summer Scholars Internship Program (SSIP). He also made significant contributions in the coordination of the Gender Summit 3 - North America.

Mr. Buhneing's detail assignments include: Communications Specialist for the Office of Information and Resource Management (OIRM) where he served as the 2015 Champion for the Feds Feed Families campaign and worked on internal communications, sharing information with NSF's employees and contractors, as well as serving as the backup Administrator of the Weekly Wire; Program Analyst for the Office of the Director (OD), where he was the Project Manager for the NSF IdeaShare and served as the Foundation's correspondence manager, as well as handling logistics for the NSF Director and Deputy Director; and he has served as Program Analyst in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB). 

Prior to working in OIA, Steven worked in the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) as a Program Assistant.  His major responsibility was assisting with the Advanced Technology Education (ATE) program.   

Before coming to NSF, Steven worked at the USDA in the Science and Technology Department as a Program Assistant handling personnel actions, awards, and was the staff contact for training, travel, personnel, and administrative issues.  

Mr. Buhneing began his federal government career on Capitol Hill, working at the U.S. Botanic Garden as an Executive Secretary, as well as serving as the designer of two exhibits.
