Vicki Chandler is the Dean of Natural Sciences at Minerva Schools at KGI. She received a B.A. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco. She performed postdoctoral research in Genetics at Stanford University. Chandler joined the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in 2009.

Prior to joining the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Chandler was on the faculty at the University of Oregon and the University of Arizona. At the University of Arizona, she was the founding director of the BIO5 Institute, an interdisciplinary research center devoted to improving health and saving lives through innovative research efforts.

Chandler's research has been on regulation of gene expression, with a focus on understanding mechanisms of meiotically heritable gene silencing. Her more recent work on paramutation, has implications not only for maize, which she used for the majority of her research, but also for animal and human genetics.

Chandler is President of the Genetics Society of America (2014) and was President of the American Society of Plant Biology. Her honors include election to the National Academy of Sciences, the Presidential Young Investigator Award, Searle Scholar Award, and American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.

She has served on advisory boards and panels for the National Research Council, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, USDA, National Institutes of Health, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Chandler has chaired numerous conferences and served on the editorial boards of several journals, including Genetics, Plant Physiology, PNAS, and Science.

She was appointed to the National Science Board in 2014.
