Free ride: Au children in Papua New Guinea are typically carried by a parent, sibling or neighbor for up to 30 months. Instead of crawling, the youngsters pass through a developmental "scooting" phase before they learn to walk.

Culture rules: Au youngsters fail more than half the time when tested for motor skills in a horizontal posture, but pass the upright vertical test. These results reflect the child-rearing practices of their culture, in which children are constantly carried and rarely put down in a prone position.
