Supports computational mathematical research focused on developing and implementing theoretically justified and computationally efficient algorithms.

Synopsis

The Computational Mathematics program supports mathematical research in areas where computation plays a central and essential role, emphasizing analysis, development, and implementation of theoretically justified and efficient algorithms. In particular, the program supports the development and analysis of innovative approaches to address the broad range of mathematical questions and challenges that arise from the design and implementation of numerical algorithms.

Innovative computational methods resulting from a combination of these elements are a hallmark of the program. Proposals ranging from single investigator to interdisciplinary team projects that create and analyze new computational mathematics techniques and implement them to model, study, and solve important application problems are strongly encouraged. Projects that provide opportunities for rigorous mathematical training of junior computational mathematicians through research involvement are welcome.

Target submission date: Proposals should be submitted to MPS Mathematical Sciences Research Programs solicitation. Target date for submissions is the  First Thursday in December.

While proposals are accepted anytime, proposers are highly encouraged to submit by the target date to ensure consideration during the corresponding panel review cycle.

Conferences

Proposals for conferences, workshops, summer/winter schools, and similar activities in Computational Mathematics must be submitted to the MPS Mathematical Sciences Research Programs solicitation using the "conference" or “travel” proposal type in research.gov. Proposers should select Computational Mathematics as the program of interest. For proposals seeking no more than $50,000, submit at least six months in advance of the conference or workshop date. For proposals seeking more than $50,000, submit at least nine months in advance of the conference or workshop date.
