Flu Outbreaks Predicted With Weather Forecast Techniques

Scientists have developed a new system that adapts techniques used in weather prediction to generate local forecasts of seasonal influenza outbreaks. By predicting the timing and severity of the outbreaks as far as seven weeks in advance, the system could eventually help society better prepare for them. Full Story

In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
