East Asia & Pacific (EAP) Regional Opportunities

The East Asia and Pacific Program (EAP) enables scientific, engineering and educational cooperation with institutions and researchers in the region (Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Western Pacific Islands).

The Program supports workshops, short-term planning visits, dissertation enhancement, and research experiences for students.

With the exception of special ISE program activities and EAP regional funding opportunities (see below), all international collaborative research proposals should be submitted directly to the appropriate NSF research directorate.

Special EAP regional opportunities:

• East Asia & Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) provide U.S. graduate students in science and engineering with first-hand experience in Australian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, New Zealand, and Taiwanese research environments, an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the respective locations, and language training during an eight week summer program. International airfare, living expenses in the host location, and a summer stipend of $4,000 are provided. • JAPAN: The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) offers a range of fellowship programs to support research visits to Japan of two weeks to two years by senior and junior researchers, postdoctoral researchers and senior doctoral students. Applications are submitted through the potential Japanese host researcher directly to JSPS. Information about the JSPS fellowships may be found both at the NSF Tokyo website and through the JSPS website.

Principal NSF partners in the region are listed by country in the Worldwide Science Organizations section of this website. Additional science and engineering organizations in East Asia and the Pacific are listed by country on the NSF Tokyo website. These organizations are the principal sources of funding for the foreign colleagues and collaborators of US investigators supported by NSF.

NSF Overseas Offices:
Both the Tokyo Regional Office and the NSF Beijing Office work with EAP staff in Arlington, VA, to facilitate opportunities for U.S. researchers and students, liaison between NSF and overseas agencies, institutions and researchers, and monitor science and engineering developments and policies in the East Asia and Pacific Region.
