CAVE2 Virtual Environment (Image 7)


Simulation in the CAVE2 system, a next-generation, large-scale, virtual environment

The CAVE2™ system is a next-generation, large-scale, virtual environment--a room in which images are seamlessly displayed so as to immerse an observer in a cyber world of 3-D data. Here, Khairi Reda, a research assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago's Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) and computer science Ph.D. candidate, uses the CAVE2 system to fly through a close-up of a glass fissure computed in a five-million atom molecular dynamics simulation. The visualization was made by Reda, Aaron Knoll and Michael Papka of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The simulation and data were provided by Kenichi Nomura and Priya Vashishta of the University of Southern California. EVL OmegaLib software was used to display the 3-D model in the CAVE2 system.

This research is supported by a National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The award, "MRI-R2: Development of the Next-generation CAVE Virtual Environment (NG-CAVE)" (grant CNS 09-59053), is under the direction of Andrew E. Johnson, Jason Leigh, Maxine D. Brown and Tom Peterka, May 2010 to April 2013.
