Request for Information: Transport Aircraft in support of NSF

May 8, 2024

The U.S. Department of the Interior has released a Request for Information (RFI) regarding large transport aircraft capable of using wheels or skis interoperably for take-offs and landings in support of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in Greenland and Antarctica.

The NSF operates NSF South Pole Station in Antarctica and NSF Summit Station in Greenland, both of which rely on ski-equipped aircraft to support the tempo of scientific research, operations, maintenance, and planned construction. In addition to these permanent, year-round stations, research projects at other remote locations on ice sheets also require ski-equipped transport aircraft for the movement of personnel, cargo, and fuel. NSF seeks to understand commercial options for meeting its requirements or for establishing the capability for aircraft transport to these locations. Note that aircraft can be shared between these missions because the primary flying seasons are during the summer months in the northern and southern hemispheres.

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
