CMMI proposal preparation and submission

March 27, 2020

Unsolicited proposals to all core programs in the NSF Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) can be submitted at any time. The Directorate for Engineering (ENG) announced this in 2018 with a Dear Colleague Letter (NSF 18-082) and provided answers to Frequently Asked Questions (NSF 18-083).

Proposals submitted to other program announcements and solicitations, including the Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) or Leading Engineering for America's Prosperity, Health, and Infrastructure (LEAP HI), must continue to meet their respective deadlines; please refer to the deadline dates specified in the appropriate announcement or solicitation.

Proposal preparation guidelines

RAPID, EAGER, and GOALI proposals
Proposals for Rapid Response Research (RAPID) or EArly-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) can be submitted at any time but Principal Investigators must contact the cognizant program director prior to submission (see the PAPPG Chapter II.E.1 for RAPID and II.E.2 for EAGER).

Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) proposals must be submitted to the relevant program at any time (see the PAPPG Chapter II.E.4).

Conference and supplement proposals
Proposals for conferences and workshops or for supplements can be submitted at any time, and Principal Investigators are encouraged to contact the cognizant Program Director prior to submission.

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
