New funding opportunity: NSF Expeditions in Computing
The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering encourages the research community to apply to the NSF Expeditions in Computing program.
Expeditions support ambitious, transformative research agendas that look at least a decade into the future and have the potential to drive disruptive advances in computer and information science and engineering. The program is designed for challenges whose scale, complexity and long-term vision require a deeply integrated, multidisciplinary team, and cannot be addressed through a collection of smaller projects. Research may span areas such as new architectures for intelligence, computing hardware and substrates, theories of learning and generalization, neuroscience-inspired computing, embodied intelligence and robotics, and next-generation communications and networking.
Projects should bring together well-integrated teams within or across departments and institutions, advance foundational or use-inspired foundational research, and create outcomes that could open new scientific frontiers, enable future technologies and strengthen the U.S. science and engineering enterprise. Researchers earlier in their careers are particularly encouraged to participate.
Award information
- Funding: Up to $15 million per project.
- Duration: Up to seven years.
- Estimated awards: Two to four per competition.
- Total anticipated funding: Up to $60 million, subject to the availability of funds.

- Required preliminary proposal: Dec. 2, 2026.
- Full proposal: July 27, 2027, by 5 p.m., submitting organization's local time.
