About the series
This event has passed, but a recording of the symposium presentations is available below. Thank you to all who made this event possible.
In celebration of June as World Ocean Month, the U.S. National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences looks forward to the 7th annual "Frontiers in Ocean Sciences Symposium," which highlights NSF-supported scientists transforming ocean science.
This year's symposium will be centered on the recently released National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine report, "Forecasting the Ocean: The 2025-2035 Decade of Ocean Science."
The symposium will start with a discussion with report authors, followed by three groups of short talks by NSF-funded scientists for each of the report's key science questions:
- Ocean and Climate: How will the ocean's ability to absorb heat and carbon change?
— with Galen A McKinley, Naomi Levine and Susan Lozier - Ecosystem Resilience: How will marine ecosystems respond to changes in the Earth system?
— with Rachael Bay, Katherine Mills and Deron Burkepile - Extreme Events: How can we improve our ability to forecast extreme events driven by ocean and seafloor processes?
— with Jeffrey Donnelly, Patrick Lynett and Diego Melgar
Schedule:
12:30pm - 1:15pm EDT: Fireside chat with Decadal Survey Authors
1:15pm - 2:15pm: Ocean and Climate panel, featuring Susan Lozier, Galen McKinley and Naomi Levine, followed by moderated Q&A
2:15pm - 2:25pm: Break
2:25pm - 3:25pm: Ecosystem Resilience panel, featuring Deron Burkepile, Rachael Bay and Kathy Mills, followed by moderated Q&A
3:25pm - 4:25pm: Extreme events panel, featuring Jeff Donnelly, Diego Melgar and Pat Lynett, followed by moderated Q&A
