Lead Agency Opportunities

What: U.S. and Swiss researchers collaborate on a single proposal that undergoes a single review process at a single (lead) agency.

Why: Promote international collaboration by reducing some barriers and uncertainty researchers may encounter.

How: Lead agency makes funding recommendation. Non-lead agency honors recommendation. Researchers supported by their country's agency.

4-year pilot
- SNSF Lead: April 1st, 2023, through March 31st, 2024
- NSF Lead: April 1st, 2024, through March 31st, 2025
- SNSF Lead: April 1st, 2025, through March 31st, 2026
- NSF Lead: April 1st, 2026, through March 31st, 2027

Regardless of Lead Agency, proposals without an approved EOI will be returned without review.
EOIs due to NSF 60 days before full proposal.
NSF intends to communicate EOI eligibility decisions ~30 days before full proposals are due.

Submission procedure at the SNSF

Participating Divisions:

All SNS Division participe
- SSH
- MINT
- Life Science

Submission EOI:

Submit the EOI to the NSF
- Regardless which agency has the Lead
- At the latest 60 days before the submission deadline
- No need to submit the EOI to the SNSF
- No submission of a proposal without an accepted EOI
- EOI is valid one year

Submit proposal:

Submission to the SNSF
- Tick the box „use inspired“ for the broader impact
- Administrative submission to the NSF only after acceptance of the proposal
