Synopsis

NSF BIO supports fundamental cell biological research.  We seek proposals that use multidisciplinary approaches to provide insights into the fundamental biology of cells from all domains of life, including understudied cell types and cells from understudied species.  Proposals that are primarily descriptive are given lower priority.

We particularly encourage proposals in the following areas:

  • Predictive understanding of cell behavior through integration of experimentation with computational modeling;
  • Evolutionary approaches to understanding cellular functions, structure, and behavior;
  • Integration of cellular structure and function with emergent properties across broad spatiotemporal scales, and;
  • Development or adaption of innovative tools or technologies to enable novel approaches to investigate cell function.
