Dear Colleague Letter

Announcement of Effort to Broaden the Participation of Students in Two-Year Hispanic Serving Institutions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

NSF is continuing to pursue a multi-faceted approach to significantly engage institutions, organizations, and individuals to broaden the participation of students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). This is one of two Dear Colleague Letters (DCLs) highlighting funding opportunities for broadening the participation of students in STEM at HSIs in fiscal year 2014 (ending September 30, 2014).

As one element of its multi-faceted approach, NSF encourages the submission of supplemental funding requests for the purpose of increasing the matriculation of graduates of two-year HSIs to four-year institutions while strengthening strategies for retention in STEM majors, such as providing research experiences for first and second-year undergraduates. Principal Investigators with active NSF awards whose end date is beyond fiscal year 2014 are invited to submit requests for supplemental funding to the programs below. Principal Investigators at two-year HSIs are particularly encouraged to apply.

Submission Deadline

The submission deadline for supplemental funding requests is May 23, 2014.

Funding Level and Duration

The amount requested for supplemental support must be less than 20% of the original award amount and should not extend the original award expiration date.

Special Instructions

Eligible Principal Investigator(s) should contact their cognizant Program Director(s) to discuss their request for supplemental support prior to submitting to NSF. Supplemental funding requests should be prepared and submitted in accordance with the guidance in the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide, Part II: Award and Administration Guide, Chapter I.E.4 (NSF 14-1): https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=aag.

BIO divisions have winter deadlines for REU supplement requests and therefore will not accept any REU supplement requests in response to this DCL. See: https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&org=BIO&from=fund.

Review Information

Requests for supplemental funding submitted in response to this Dear Colleague Letter will be reviewed internally by NSF program directors. All supplements are subject to (a) the availability of funds, and (b) review of the quality of the supplemental funding request.

Sincerely,
Joan Ferrini-Mundy, Assistant Director
