Supplements to Connect CISE, EHR, and ENG Projects to Neural and Cognitive Systems

Dear Colleague:

Major advances in understanding the brain have depended on fundamental contributions from many different disciplinary communities, often engaging with neural and cognitive questions in creative and surprising ways.

NSF's newly released solicitation on Integrative Strategies for Understanding Neural and Cognitive Systems (NSF-NCS; NSF 16-508) provides an opportunity for additional funding to connect new or existing projects to significant new integrative opportunities in neural and cognitive systems. These CORE+ SUPPLEMENTS are intended to build on NSF-funded projects in all areas of engineering, computing, and education research, to bring new approaches or capabilities emerging from these fields into cognitive science, neuroscience, and neuroengineering, or to enable other kinds of synergistic connections that will advance one or more of the integrative themes described in the solicitation: Neuroengineering and Brain-Inspired Concepts and Designs; Individuality and Variation; Cognitive and Neural Processes in Realistic, Complex Environments; and Data-Intensive Neuroscience and Cognitive Science.

CORE+ SUPPLEMENTS may be requested for new or existing projects managed by the CISE, EHR, or ENG directorates. A supplemental funding request under this mechanism will not exceed $200,000, or 20% of an existing award, whichever is less.

The integrative themes, and instructions for preparing a supplemental funding request, are described further in solicitation NSF 16-508. Contact your cognizant program officer or directorate contact (listed in Section VIII of the solicitation) prior to submitting a CORE+ SUPPLEMENT request.

Sincerely,

Joan Ferrini-Mundy, Assistant Director for Education and Human Resources
Pramod Khargonekar, Assistant Director for Engineering
James Kurose, Assistant Director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering
