Quantum Information Science (QIS) is a convergence of quantum mechanics and information theory that examines quantum phenomena that can be harnessed to advance information processing, transmission, measurement, and fundamental understanding in ways that classical approaches can only do less efficiently or not at all. The MPS Physics QIS program supports theoretical and experimental research on physics issues in quantum information processing. This includes pioneering efforts to develop platforms, algorithms, protocols, and applications for quantum simulation, quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum networking. It also includes basic research to advance our understanding of what is fundamentally possible with quantum technology, and new ways to utilize quantum information science.
While the QIS program primarily enables research on the physics of quantum information, the program also fosters multidisciplinary interactions, for example with joint efforts between physicists, mathematicians, and computer scientists to solve problems in a variety of quantum frontiers. Proposals that cross disciplinary boundaries are welcome, and principal investigators may indicate secondary programs on the cover sheet to facilitate participation of other NSF programs in the review and selection process. Proposals with an intellectual focus primarily in disciplines supported by other NSF components should be submitted to those components directly.
