NSB News Release: New Members Appointed to the National Science Board

President Donald Trump has appointed two new members to the National Science Board (NSB): Matthew Malkan (University of California Los Angeles) and Scott Stanley (Techno Planet). NSB is the governing body of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and advises Congress and the Administration on issues in science and engineering. NSB members serve six-year terms.
Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Kelvin Droegemeier administered the oath of office for Malkan and Stanley earlier today, joined by NSB Chair Ellen Ochoa.
“We are pleased that we can welcome Scott and Matt to the National Science Board, and have sworn both of them in this afternoon,” said Kelvin Droegemeier, Director of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. “Their expertise and experience will no doubt be helpful as we continue to address the pressing science needs of the nation.”
“This is a critical time for science and engineering in our country,” said Ochoa. “Our board of accomplished individuals, which is now at full capacity, is dedicated to pursuing new knowledge and delivering benefits to society.”
Matthew Malkan is a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California Los Angeles. He makes multi-wavelength observations across the electromagnetic spectrum and measures very distant galaxies and how they have evolved across cosmic time, including the build-up of their stars, their heavy elements, and their giant black holes. He has authored or co-authored more than 500 scientific articles in refereed journals, and several hundred conference proceedings, chapters, and other publications. He is also a frequent scientific reviewer for NSF and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), focusing on prize fellowships and ground- and space-based telescopes.
Scott Stanley is Vice President of Technology for Techno Planet, an aerospace engineering firm he co-founded in 2008 based in Northridge, California. Previously he held senior roles at Hughes Aircraft, Schaeffer Magnetics, Moog, and Alliance Spacesystems. He is an industry expert in the development and manufacture of spacecraft mechanisms for orbital and planetary applications, and drills and sample acquisition systems focused on Mars and the Moon. He has been a NASA Principal Investigator for planetary robotic drilling, coring, and sample handling development projects.
With these two appointments the NSB class of 2020-2026 is now complete.

The NSB and NSF’s Director jointly head the agency. The Board identifies issues critical to NSF's future and establishes its policies. The NSB also provides the President and Congress with Science and Engineering Indicators, a biennial report on U.S. progress in science and technology. Members are appointed by the President for six-year terms and are selected for their eminence in research, education, and records of distinguished service.
