OPP welcomes Dr. Marion Dierickx as new Antarctic Sciences Program Director

September 25, 2024

Dr. Marion Dierickx joins the NSF Office of Polar Programs as a Program Director in the Antarctic Astrophysics and Geospace, and Cyberinfrastructure programs. Dierickx comes to OPP from the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Boston, MA, where she worked as a Research Scientist.

An experimental astrophysicist with broad expertise in computational simulations, telescope instrumentation and operations, Dierickx earned her Ph.D. from Harvard in 2017. Her research is on conducting Cosmic Microwave Background polarization measurements from the South Pole, searching for primordial gravitational waves left behind by the Big Bang. As a member of the BICEP/Keck and CMB-S4 collaborations, Dierickx's work spanned receiver cryogenic and optical design, optimizing survey uptime and sensitivity, and planning field deployments and infrastructure.

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
