3-D structure of a conical dendron

This diagram illustrates the 3-D structure of a conical dendron (top), 12 of which self-assemble into an 8,500-atom spherical dendrimer, shown in simplified form constructed from cones (middle) and in its detailed schematic structure (bottom).

spherical dendrimers

The spherical dendrimers form a liquid crystal material that has an unexpectedly complex lattice structure. The lattice has a repetitive unit cell of 30 spheres -- more than 250,000 atoms -- in a rectangular volume nearly 20 nanometers by 10 nanometers.
