Ann Q. Gates is the senior advisor to the provost for Strategic STEM Initiatives and the past senior vice provost of Faculty Affairs at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), where she holds the AT&T Distinguished Professorship. Gates also served as chair of the computer science department and associate VP of research and sponsored projects. Her areas of research are in software engineering and cyberinfrastructure with an emphasis on workflows, ontologies and formal software specification. She earned a doctoral degree in computer science from New Mexico State University, a master's degree in computer science from UTEP and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biology from UTEP.

Gates served on the IEEE-Computer Society Board of Governors from 2004 to 2009. She was a member of the Computer Science Accreditation Board from 2011 to 2013 and served on the Naval Research Advisory Committee from 2016 to 2018. She received the 2021 Alfredo G. de los Santos Jr. Distinguished Leadership Award, the Computing Research Association 2015 A. Nico Habermann Award, the 2010 Anita Borg Institute Social Impact Award, the 2009 Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award and was named to Hispanic Business magazine's 100 Influential Hispanics in 2006.
