Dr. Kennedy S. Wekesa serves as the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs at Alabama State University. Prior to this appointment, he served as dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. He holds a faculty appointment in the department of biological sciences. Over the years, Wekesa has been involved in several initiatives aimed at increasing the number of undergraduate and high school minority students participating in science, technology, engineering and math, with the goal of strengthening their interest to go on and pursue graduate programs. He has received more than $30 million in extramural research and training support from the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Justice, NASA and the Alabama State Department of Education.

Wekesa's research has been published in national and international peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented his research findings at several universities, including North Carolina State University, University of Maryland-Baltimore County and Auburn University. His opinions have been published in The Scientist, Bloomberg News and USA Today. He has served on numerous university, state and national committees, including as an advisory committee member for the National Science Foundation Directorate for Biological Sciences.

He received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Guilford College, a Master of Arts in biology from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a doctorate in zoology from NC State University.
