New leadership roles and appointments in NSF EDU
As part of the organizational realignment of the U.S. National Science Foundation, the four divisions, previously in the NSF Directorate of STEM Education (NSF EDU), have been realigned into two clusters: (1) STEM Workforce and Talent Development; and (2) STEM Education Research and Innovation. To provide better management and oversight, NSF implemented new leadership roles across the agency, including NSF EDU.
EDU is led by Directorate Head Sylvia M. Butterfield and Assistant Director James L. Moore III. Two deputy directorate heads are now part of the EDU leadership team and jointly assist in supervising EDU staff, programs and activities:
- Charisse Carney-Nunes, EDU deputy directorate head, overseeing STEM Workforce and Talent Development.
- Monya Ruffin, EDU deputy directorate head, overseeing STEM Education Research and Innovation.
Evan Heit, who previously served as the division director of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings, and the "Intergovernmental Personnel Act" executive, Jacqueline Huntoon, who previously served as the division director for Graduate Education, will now serve as senior advisors.
Together, the staff and leadership of EDU will continue to deliver on NSF's mission to advance the progress of science, advance the national health, prosperity and welfare, and secure the national defense. Additional information about EDU funding opportunities will be communicated and posted on NSF's website in the coming months.
