Supports research on evolutionary processes at all scales, from the molecular to biogeographic, to understand the mechanisms that shape the adaptation, distribution, speciation and diversity of life.

Supports research on evolutionary processes at all scales, from the molecular to biogeographic, to understand the mechanisms that shape the adaptation, distribution, speciation and diversity of life.

Synopsis

NSF BIO supports research that addresses micro- and macroevolutionary processes and their consequences regardless of spatial or temporal scale. Questions may address evolutionary processes at any level including: 1) the genome and epigenome; 2) the phenotype; 3) evolution and adaptation within species; 4) evolution and coevolution of interactions between and among species (e.g., hybridization, parasitism, etc.); and 5) biogeography. Research may include empirical and theoretical approaches. Topics of study may include the population genetics and quantitative genetics of evolution at any scale; processes that maintain genetic variation; evolution of genetic architecture; life-history evolution; the dynamics of population diversification and speciation; the dynamics of natural selection and sexual selection; and feedback between ecological and evolutionary processes.
