The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Geosciences (NSF GEO) welcomes Joydip "JD" Kundu as deputy assistant director. Kundu brings nearly two decades of experience to the role, leading and analyzing federal research programs.

"There's so much opportunity across the geosciences for transformative discovery and innovation that will improve Americans' lives, and I'm excited to work with the directorate and community to realize that opportunity," Kundu said.

Kundu joins NSF GEO from the NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, where he spent the last several years as the directorate's deputy assistant director and, before that, the deputy division director for the NSF Division of Information and Intelligent Systems. Kundu also served as the acting deputy division director for the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics in the NSF Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences.

Before joining NSF, Kundu worked at the White House Office of Management and Budget as a program examiner covering various topics, including polar activities, Earth observations and space weather. He also worked as a research associate in physics at the University of Maryland.

Kundu received a doctorate in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and mathematics from Harvard University.
