New collaborative fire research program will advance wildland fire science and resilience
As wildland fires become more severe and impact communities, the U.S. National Science Foundation, along with key partners, has introduced the NSF Fire Science Innovations through Research and Education (FIRE) program. This transformative initiative aims to enhance wildland fire science, education and resilience.
In partnership with NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, NSF will support projects addressing the growing complexity of wildland fires.
The NSF FIRE program focuses on three key areas.
- It supports research to advance fire behavior prediction using artificial intelligence and satellite data.
- It also enhances community safety near wildlands by improving local decision-making and infrastructure.
- Lastly, it fosters collaboration among experts and community members to share knowledge and develop innovative solutions in research and education.
By building partnerships across disciplines, sectors and regions, the FIRE program aims to deliver large-scale breakthroughs combating wildland fire impacts.
