DMS Research Institutes

The U.S. National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences (NSF DMS) supports multiple institutes nationwide that advance research and workforce development in the mathematical sciences and statistics.

NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NSF-Simons NITMB)

In partnership with the Simons Foundation, NSF-Simons NITMB aims to build a mathematics-based understanding of biology at all scales of life — from individual cells to interactions between species. Led by Northwestern University in collaboration with the University of Chicago, the institute brings together experts across the mathematical and biological sciences to explore research challenges related to various topics and industries, such as the environment, biomedicine and biotechnology.

NSF Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes

NSF DMS supports six institutes that seek to amplify the impact of the mathematical sciences in other disciplines, catalyze innovations in the mathematical sciences to respond to national needs and expand the talent base engaged in mathematical and statistical research in the U.S.

American Institute of Mathematics (AIM)

Located at the California Institute of Technology, AIM fosters progress in all areas of mathematical sciences. Through focused collaborative research groups and other activities, AIM supports emerging mathematics and paves the way for new connections between areas of mathematics and new applications to other fields.

Institute for Computer-Aided Reasoning in Mathematics (ICARM)

Located at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, ICARM provides tools and support to empower mathematicians to effectively integrate artificial intelligence, machine learning, formal methods and automated reasoning into their research. The institute is dedicated to catalyzing fundamental advances in mathematics by harnessing the ongoing revolution in AI and computer-assisted reasoning.

Institute for Advanced Study School of Mathematics (IAS)

The School of Mathematics at IAS in New Jersey supports curiosity-driven research and independent inquiry across all fields of mathematics and their applications to other areas of science and engineering, with the dual aims of advancing the discipline and fostering mathematical talent. IAS actively facilitates an environment where scholars interact in a way that is not narrowly constrained by field boundaries.

Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM)

Located at Brown University in Rhode Island, ICERM supports the creation of new computational and experimental methods to advance research in the mathematical sciences and to foster a deeper understanding of algorithms and computational tools that guide progress in an ever-widening range of scientific and industrial endeavors, including AI, cryptography, data analysis, image processing and industrial design.

Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI)

Located at The University of Chicago, in partnership with Northwestern University, the University of Illinois Chicago and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, IMSI catalyzes new mathematical and statistical approaches to help address complex and urgent scientific and societal challenges. Scientific themes include data and information, health care and medicine, material science, quantum computing and uncertainty quantification.

Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath)

Located in California, SLMath advances fundamental mathematical research and prepares the next generation of science, technology, engineering and mathematics professionals through programs aimed at the postdoc, graduate and undergraduate levels. The research facilitated by the institute encompasses a wide spectrum of mathematics, often aimed at setting new directions in the field. This is exemplified by the institute's impact on the theory of random matrices, relevant for theoretical physics, finance and other scientific disciplines.
