Study Reveals Increase in Bandwidth at Academic Institutions

According to a recent report published by the National Science Foundation, cyberinfrastructure resources at academic research institutions have increased substantially since 2005. The fiscal year (FY) 2011 Survey of Science and Engineering and Research Facilities reveals that bandwidth increased significantly during the FY 2005-2011 timeframe.
In FY 2011, 59 percent of academic institutions reported bandwidth of at least 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), compared with 21 percent of such institutions in FY 2005. The percentage of academic institutions with network connections of 10 Gbps or greater increased from 2 percent to 25 percent during this period.
Academic institutions continue to gain greater access to high-speed bandwidth through a network of national and regional providers. This increase in connectivity ensures reliable and efficient data transfer at the schools and laboratories.
