National Science Board meets February 25 in Washington, DC

Among the agenda items: NSF's new management structure and merit review reform, and updates on the Board's 2026 Science & Engineering Indicators

The National Science Board (NSB) will convene at the American Chemical Society from 11:35 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. to address science and engineering policy issues. Details are in the Sunshine Agenda meeting notice.

Open sessions

11:35 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.:

  • NSF's management team will give a presentation on the agency's new management and decision-making structure, followed by Board discussion.
  • NSF Chief Science Officer Simon Malcomber and NSB Vice Chair Aaron Dominguez will hold a fireside chat focused on NSF's recent Merit Review reforms.

2:00 – 3:30 p.m.:

  • NSB member Wanda Ward, who led development of the Board's recently released report, "Merit Review for a Changing Landscape", will present the report's key findings and recommendations.
  • The Board will appoint a committee to prepare for Board leadership elections in May.
  • NSB Science and Engineering Policy Chair Julia Phillips will give an update on Indicators 2026 reports, Board member Ryan Panchadsaram will highlight private sector engagements, and Committee on Oversight Chair Wanda Ward will report on a recent meeting of that committee. 

Closed sessions

During closed session, the Committee on Awards and Facilities will discuss the annual report of NSF's Chief Officer for Research Facilities. The Board will also confer on the status and next steps for the nominations process for the 2026-2032 NSB cohort.
