Proposals in the area of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics - Theory that are not governed by another funding opportunity should be submitted to the MPS Physics Research Programs (MPS Physics) funding opportunity.

- Proposals submitted after the Target Date of the fiscal year may be considered for funding in the following fiscal year.

The Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics - Theory program supports theoretical and computational research on the fundamental properties of atoms, ions, and small molecules, including their interactions with one another, with charged particles, and with electromagnetic fields. Of particular interest are collisional and spectroscopic studies which enable experimental advances into the control of atoms, ions, and small molecules for improved metrology, imaging, sensing, and information processing. Quantum optics and cavity QED research are also within scope, as are applications to phenomena in highly controlled or extreme environments including ultra-cold gases, ionized gases, and strong fields.
Investigations primarily directed toward a theoretical understanding of larger molecules or condensed matter systems should be directed toward the appropriate programs within MPS Chemistry or MPS Materials Research, respectively.
