FAQs on Safe and Inclusive Work Environments Posted

April 10, 2023

NSF has posted some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding preparation and submission of plans for Safe and Inclusive (SAI) Working Environments under the pilot being run by the Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO) and Geosciences (GEO).

The FAQs can be found at and a PDF version can be found at

As a reminder, Program Directors from BIO and GEO hosted a virtual office hour to provide information to and answer questions from the community about the pilot. A recording of the session, transcript, and slides can be found at the link above.

Programs currently participating in the pilot (as of March 24, 2023) are:

  • BIO core solicitations:
    • Division of Environmental Biology (NSF 23-549)
    • Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (NSF 23-547)
    • Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (NSF 23-548
  • Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP, NSF 23-559)
  • Biodiversity on a Changing Planet (BoCP, NSF 23-542
  • Pathways into the Geosciences (GEOPAths, NSF 23-540)
  • Cultural Transformation in the Geosciences Community (CTGC, NSF 23-539)
  • Global Centers (GC, NSF 23-557)

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
