National Science Board will meet virtually August 3 - 4, 2021

The National Science Board (NSB) will meet virtually August 3 - 4, 2021 to address science and engineering policy issues relevant to the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Sunshine Act notice and the meeting agenda provide details.

Community Colleges: Opening Doors to STEM Talent Everywhere (1:50 PM – 2:50 PM)

NSB External Engagement Committee Chair Geraldine “Geri” Richmond will host a panel discussion on community colleges’ essential role in opening doors to higher education and as a path into STEM. A Q&A will follow the presentations. The panel is part of a series to raise awareness of challenges in STEM and inform addressing goals of NSB’s Vision 2030.

Panelists:

Thomas Brock, Director and Research Professor, Community College Research Center and Teacher’s College, Columbia University. 

Krissy DeAlejandro, Executive Director, tnAchieves,a non-profit to increase educational opportunities for Tennessee students and partner of the Tennessee Promise, which gives two-year scholarships to cover the cost of community college tuition.

Mary Slowinski, Principal Investigator, NSF-ATE Working Partners Project & Workshops, Bellevue College. The program provides tools to educators to cultivate and sustain industry relationships.

Reavelyn Marie Pray, Research Associate, Natera and graduate of Texas A&M, Del Mar Community College, and a winner of NSF’s Community College Innovation Challenge.

NSB Open Plenary (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM)

The Plenary will feature two presentations.

In the first, Board Vice Chair Victor McCrary will give a retrospective of the first year of Vision 2030 activities and lay out NSB Vision priorities for the coming year.

In the second presentation, Shirley Malcom, Senior Advisor and Director of the STEMM Equity Achievement (SEA) Change program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, will brief NSB on lessons learned from SEA Change. Malcom will share insights into opportunities for grant-making agencies to leverage existing processes to spur systemic change for the Missing Millions and enhance the Broader Impacts of research.

The NSB identifies issues critical to NSF’s future, establishes its policies, and serves as co-head of agency with the NSF Director. The Board also advises the President and Congress on policy matters related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and STEM education. Selected for their distinguished service and accomplishments in academia, government, and the private sector, the Board’s 24 presidentially appointed members are leaders in STEM research and education.
