National Science Board will hold a hybrid meeting Dec 1 – 2, 2022

The National Science Board (NSB) will hold a hybrid meeting December 1 – 2, 2022 to address science and engineering policy issues relevant to the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Sunshine Act notice and the meeting agenda provide meeting details. NSB committees will meet prior to the Board meeting.

12:30 – 5:05 p.m.                           OPEN SESSIONS

The meeting kicks off with remarks from NSB Chair Dan Reed and NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. The Board’s oversight, external engagement, and science and engineering policy committees will give updates, as will NSB working groups that are exploring socioeconomic status and K-12 STEM education.

From 2:55 – 4:20 p.m., NSB Vice Chair Victor McCrary will moderate a discussion panel: Addressing Workforce Shortages in Critical Technologies. Panelists James Moreland (Raytheon Technologies), Falan Yinug (Qualcomm), Adele Ratcliff (DoD Innovation Capability and Modernization office), and Catherine Woteki (Iowa State University) will highlight data and offer insights during brief presentations and a discussion with Board members.

Following the panel, NSF will give an update on theSexual Assault / Harassment Prevention Response (SAHPR) report.

Lastly, from 4:30 – 5:05 p.m., the Board will talk with Arati Prabhakar, OSTP Director and Chief Advisor for Science and Technology about her vision and goals.

On December 2, the Board will meet entirely in closed sessions, adjourning at 1:35 p.m. Closed agenda items include: approval of closed meeting minutes, updates on NSF implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act and on addressing the Antarctic sexual harassment report, and closed reports from NSB’s Awards and Facilities and Strategy committees and the Subcommittee on Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP). NSB members will also discuss funding options for the agency’s TIP Directorate and discuss and vote on the Board’s 2023 Vannevar Bush and Science and Society awardees.

External guests may attend open sessions of the NSB meeting in person. In-person visitors should email their name as it appears on their photo ID, along with affiliation, at least 24 hours in advance to nationalsciencebrd@nsf.gov. Assuming that the COVID status for Alexandria, Virginia remains “medium” or goes to “high,” visitors must fill out and bring OMB’s certification of vaccination form. Visitors who are not vaccinated or refuse to divulge their vaccination status will not be admitted. NSB continues to livestream all open meeting sessions and links for each day are above.
